Butyl extruder machines are indispensable in insulating glass production and save a lot of hassle. They have three major types with regard to their design. The smallest of the three types are the so-called small butyl extruders with 1 Kg sealing product capacity. They are followed in size by machines capable of holding 2.5 Kg product, which are much bigger and more robust machines. The largest butyl machines are the mega butyl extruders capable of holding 7 Kg material. All three machine sizes may have extra features specifically requested from the manufacturer, such as all around butyl sealing function, PLC controller, touch screen display, fast heat up, or selection of butyl dispensing direction.

In insulated glass production (also known as thermo glass) the so-called Butyl sealing material is essential and very popular today. This material is used as sealing layer between the two glass panes and spacer bars that determine the size of the insulating air gap between the glass panes. With a little exaggeration we can say what used to be putty has become the butyl by now. This butyl material is not environmentally friendly as it is mainly consist of a petroleum product made with different chemical processes.

As a forerunner to the transition from putty to butyl in the insulating glass production industry, the so-called butyl strip provided the start-up idea for the now-popular butyl extrusion machine. The use of these small but very efficient and time-saving extrusion machines started to spread as gluing the butyl strip into place was rather time consuming and inconvenient task.  Initially, simpler machines gained ground, but soon a variety of needs came to the surface, which required the development of these machines. Basically these machines fall into three categories. There are extruder machines with 1 Kg and 2,5 Kg and 7 Kg sealing product capacity. It is a bit exaggerated to say that these machines, while naturally differing in structure and components from manufacturer to manufacturer, are exactly the same except for their size. Machines of different sizes have become a necessity for manufacturers for two reasons. One reason is that some manufacturers make smaller insulated glass panels while others make larger ones due to their specific production profiles. The manufacturers of larger insulated glasses, of course, use larger spacer bars, and in that case larger machines are more comfortable to use. The other thing is the capacity of sealing product container. Of course a company that seals large quantity of spacer bar frames consumes a lot of butyl material, so it is advisable to buy a machine with a bigger container, because this way the product filling time can be reduced to a minimum.

Extruder machine manufacturers have not left out this type of machine from their automation efforts, and have performed a complete redesign of its electrical controller. Thus by now these machines are capable of operating at multiple speeds, multiple pressure levels, and perform butyl sealing of not only on straight but any curved spacer bars, and have touch screen display or the ability to automatically heat up for operation in the morning.
